Functional mushrooms are sold on numbers printed on bottles. 15:1. 30 % beta-glucans. 100 % fruiting body. Dual extracted. Lab tested. Every one of those can be useful information, and not one of them, on its own, tells you whether the product is any good. "Fruiting body good, mycelium bad" is repeated as a rule by people who have never checked it against Chaga or Cordyceps. Meanwhile the four mushrooms sold together most often get treated as four versions of the same ingredient, when they are four genuinely different fungi produced in genuinely different ways.
This guide is our attempt to fix that. It covers the fungal biology, the extraction chemistry, the analytical testing, the human research and the marketing shorthand that has hardened into rules nobody checks. Some of it makes functional mushrooms look better than you might expect. Some of it makes them look worse. That's the point: we've written what the evidence supports, not what sells product.

New to functional mushrooms? This is the overview: what the term actually covers, how the four mushrooms differ, and why no single number on a label defines quality.
The four mushrooms
Lion's Mane, Reishi, Chaga and Cordyceps get grouped together constantly, but they aren't four versions of one ingredient. One produces cascading white spines. One is hard and woody. One isn't a conventional fruiting body at all. One is cultured mycelium grown by fermentation.
Each article covers what the fungus actually is, which fungal material ends up in supplements, what the human research does and doesn't show, and what we'd check before buying one.

Fungal material
"Fruiting body good, mycelium bad" is the industry's favourite rule, and it falls apart on contact with the four mushrooms it's most often applied to. Chaga isn't a conventional fruiting body. Cordyceps CS-4 is deliberately cultured mycelium. And the genuine concern behind the rule, mycelium grown through cereal grain with the substrate left in, is a different issue from mycelium itself.
The distinction that matters
Pure cultured mycelium and mycelium milled together with its cereal growth substrate are not the same ingredient. Where grain remains, it contributes starch, which is why alpha-glucan and starch testing can be more revealing than a total polysaccharide figure.
Extraction & processing
Extraction is a separation process, not a shrinking process. A solvent transfers some of the constituents from fungal material into a liquid, which is then filtered, concentrated and dried. Which constituents make that journey depends on the solvent, the temperature, the time and the starting material.
That's why an extract isn't simply a smaller mushroom, why a bigger ratio doesn't mean a stronger product, and why "dual extracted" describes a method rather than a grade.

"Lab tested" means nothing until you know what was tested. Contaminant screening, specification testing, identity verification and compound profiling answer four different questions, and passing one doesn't answer another. A clean heavy-metal result tells you nothing about whether the species is correct.

It's easy to describe what a mushroom extract should provide. The more meaningful test is whether we apply those standards to our own range. Our Reishi article publishes the analytical figures behind that extract, and our Cordyceps article discloses the processing carrier in full, including the part most brands would rather not mention.
Buying guide
Choosing a mushroom supplement involves more than finding the biggest number. The UK market puts carefully produced, properly characterised extracts alongside vague species names, undeclared substrate and percentages produced by unstated methods.
The strongest products tend to make several pieces of evidence agree with each other, rather than relying on one impressive figure.
"15:1 extract"
A manufacturing relationship, not a potency score.
"30% beta-glucans"
Useful, but shared across many unrelated fungi.
"100% fruiting body"
Says nothing about how well it was grown or extracted.
"Third-party lab tested"
Tested for what, by whom, and on which batch?
Safety & how to use
Many mushroom preparations have been used in human studies without major safety signals. That isn't the same as proving every mushroom supplement is suitable for every person indefinitely. The evidence is uneven between the four, long-term data are limited, and direct research on interactions with prescription medicines is sparser than the internet suggests.

What are functional mushrooms?
"Functional mushroom" is a modern umbrella term rather than a formal scientific classification. It's generally used for fungi consumed or prepared for reasons beyond ordinary culinary use. The convenience of the category hides some enormous differences: the mushrooms grouped under it can be very different organisms, produced in very different ways.
Does a 10:1 or 15:1 extract mean it's stronger?
No. An extraction ratio describes roughly how much starting material was used to produce one part of native extract. It's a manufacturing relationship, not a potency scale. It doesn't tell you which compounds were recovered, what was lost during processing, whether a carrier is present, or whether the fungal material was correctly identified. 15:1 isn't automatically better than 8:1.
Is fruiting body always better than mycelium?
No, and the four mushrooms in this guide demonstrate why. Chaga is harvested as a sterile conk rather than a conventional fruiting body. Cordyceps CS-4 is deliberately built around cultured mycelium. The legitimate concern behind the rule is mycelium grown through cereal grain with the substrate milled in, which is a different question from whether mycelium itself is genuine fungal material.
Is dual-extracted better than hot-water extracted?
Not automatically. Alcohol can substantially improve recovery of less water-soluble compounds, and there's real chemistry behind that. But the tidy rule that water gets the polysaccharides and alcohol gets the triterpenes is incomplete: researchers have isolated multiple ganoderic and lucidenic acids from aqueous Reishi extracts. Temperature, time, ethanol concentration and starting material all matter, and a poorly executed dual extraction doesn't become premium because two solvents were involved.
Are beta-glucans and polysaccharides the same thing?
No. Beta-glucans are one type of polysaccharide, but polysaccharides is a much broader category that can include alpha-glucans, starch and other complex carbohydrates. So a product advertising 40 % polysaccharides isn't necessarily showing you something better than one reporting 30 % beta-glucans. They aren't measuring the same thing, and the analytical method behind the figure matters too.
What does "lab tested" actually mean?
Nothing specific until the test is named. It might refer to heavy metals, microbiology, pesticides, moisture, identity, glucans, individual compounds or batch consistency. These answer different questions and aren't interchangeable. Passing a heavy-metal specification is important, but it tells you nothing about whether the species on the label is the species in the capsule.
Does Lion's Mane improve focus or memory?
Researchers have measured attention, executive function, memory and mood in human Lion's Mane studies. Some individual tests have produced positive findings, others haven't, and a 2025 acute study found no significant overall improvement in composite cognitive performance against placebo. The trials are small, the preparations differ considerably, and results aren't uniformly positive. It has been studied in relation to cognition. That isn't the same as it being established that any Lion's Mane supplement makes a healthy person more focused.
Is Reishi really Ganoderma lucidum?
The terminology is genuinely complicated. Ganoderma lucidum was applied broadly for decades to shiny Reishi-like fungi, while modern molecular work distinguishes several species, including Ganoderma lingzhi. One study of commercial products found most labelled G. lucidum actually contained G. lingzhi. Much of that confusion came from taxonomy changing rather than from deception, but it's a good reason to take species identity seriously.
Is Cordyceps CS-4 the same as wild Cordyceps?
No. Wild Chinese caterpillar fungus is Ophiocordyceps sinensis, a fungus-insect complex from high-altitude Himalayan regions that can trade for tens of thousands of pounds per kilogram. CS-4 is a cultivated mycelial fermentation product, historically described as Paecilomyces hepiali and now placed under Samsoniella hepiali. It also isn't Cordyceps militaris, so research on one shouldn't be applied to another.
Is Chaga a mushroom?
Chaga is a fungus, but the familiar black material harvested from birch trunks isn't a conventional reproductive fruiting body. It's a sterile conk produced by Inonotus obliquus. That single fact breaks the "only fruiting bodies count" rule, which is why we describe our Chaga products as conk rather than forcing the terminology to fit.
Are mushroom supplements safe?
Many preparations have been reasonably well tolerated in the populations and timeframes studied, but the evidence is uneven and long-term data are limited. Chaga has published case reports of oxalate-related kidney injury following very high or prolonged intake. Interaction research across functional mushrooms is far less complete than online lists suggest. If you take medication, have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are preparing for surgery, speak to a qualified healthcare professional.
Can I take more than one mushroom at once?
Different mushroom products can form part of the same routine where each is suitable for you and you stay within the directions on each individual product. But having four available doesn't mean you need four. We deliberately don't label combinations as a "focus pair" or "calm focus" stack, because naming a pairing after an outcome turns it into an implied health claim. What we can give you is the framework and the proportions, and let you choose.
