We should probably begin with a confession.

We like Shilajit.

We sell it, use it, study it and believe that a well-sourced, appropriately processed and properly tested product can be a worthwhile addition to a sensible health routine.

We also spend an unusual amount of time criticising Shilajit claims.

That might look contradictory.

It isn’t.

We challenge exaggerated percentages, invented mechanisms, vague sourcing and meaningless laboratory claims because we think Shilajit deserves to be taken seriously.

Being an advocate doesn’t mean nodding politely at everything said about an ingredient.

Sometimes advocacy means asking awkward questions.

Our position in one sentence

We believe Shilajit has genuine value, but we don’t believe everything said about it.

That is the position behind every article in this guide.

We aren’t trying to convince you that Shilajit is useless.

We aren’t trying to convince you that it can fix every aspect of your health either.

We’re trying to separate what is known, what is plausible, what is traditional, what is preliminary and what appears to have been invented by somebody trying to sell another jar.

Yes, we believe Shilajit can be worthwhile

Shilajit is an unusual natural material with a long history of use and a complicated organic-mineral composition.

It has been used within several traditional medical cultures, most prominently Ayurveda, and it continues to attract scientific interest.

There are legitimate reasons to study and use it.

These include:

  • Its long history as a restorative preparation

  • Its complex mixture of organic and mineral material

  • Early research into areas such as energy, exercise, male reproductive health and mitochondrial function

  • The experiences of people who feel that it benefits them

  • The possibility that well-characterised Shilajit preparations may have useful biological effects

We don’t think all of that should be dismissed simply because the research is incomplete.

Scientific uncertainty doesn’t mean something has no value.

It means we should be honest about what has and hasn’t been established.

No, we don’t believe every claim

The Shilajit market is full of impressive-sounding statements.

Some are based on genuine tradition or emerging research.

Others are stretched beyond recognition.

And some are absolute nonsense.

We don’t believe that:

  • Every dark substance in a glass jar is good Shilajit.

  • A mountain photograph proves geographical origin.

  • “85 minerals” is a meaningful quality specification.

  • A high fulvic-acid percentage means anything without the test method and reporting basis.

  • Fulvic acid acts as a magical delivery van for everything else in the product.

  • Raw Shilajit is automatically more authentic.

  • Sun drying is automatically gentle.

  • Heat automatically destroys the product.

  • “Filtered seven times” proves anything without knowing what the filter was.

  • One small study justifies guaranteed claims about testosterone, energy or ageing.

  • Traditional use and modern clinical proof are the same thing.

  • More expensive always means better.

  • Cheaper always means good value.

Challenging those claims isn’t an attack on Shilajit.

It is an attack on poor reasoning.

Why do so many articles in this guide sound critical?

Because much of the available information deserves criticism.

A consumer searching for Shilajit advice is likely to encounter:

  • Brand-written articles presented as neutral education

  • The same unsupported claims copied across hundreds of websites

  • Laboratory numbers with no explanation of the method

  • Traditional stories presented as verified history

  • Animal research described as a proven human benefit

  • Ingredient studies quietly applied to unrelated commercial products

  • Safety discussions designed either to terrify people or dismiss every concern

  • Videos in which authenticity is supposedly established using fire, water, a freezer or someone’s thumb

If we repeated all of that uncritically, this guide would be easier to write.

It would also be considerably less useful.

Some of the strongest advocates for an ingredient should be its most demanding critics.

When weak claims go unchallenged, poor products become harder to distinguish from good ones. Genuine science disappears beneath marketing noise. Consumers waste money. Eventually, people begin to assume the entire category is a scam.

Criticism can protect the reputation of a worthwhile ingredient.

We don’t confuse scepticism with dismissal

Scepticism is often treated as a negative position.

It doesn’t have to be.

Healthy scepticism simply means asking:

  • What is the evidence?

  • What exactly was tested?

  • Was the study performed in humans?

  • Which Shilajit preparation was used?

  • Was the product chemically characterised?

  • How large was the study?

  • Was there a control group?

  • Has the result been repeated?

  • Is the conclusion stronger than the data?

Those questions don’t assume that Shilajit doesn’t work.

They prevent us from claiming that it works in ways the evidence hasn’t yet demonstrated.

There is a large space between blind belief and automatic rejection.

That is where this guide intends to live.

Traditional knowledge, science and personal experience aren’t the same thing

Discussions about Shilajit often become confused because different kinds of evidence are treated as interchangeable.

They aren’t.

Traditional use

Traditional use can tell us that people valued Shilajit, developed systems for preparing it and used it for particular purposes over long periods.

That matters.

It can help identify areas worthy of modern investigation.

It doesn’t automatically establish:

  • Modern clinical efficacy

  • An optimal dose

  • Safety for every person

  • The chemical identity of every commercial product

  • The accuracy of every story attached to the tradition

Scientific evidence

Science can investigate:

  • Composition

  • Biological mechanisms

  • Toxicology

  • Processing

  • Stability

  • Absorption

  • Human outcomes

  • Product quality

But not all studies provide equal evidence.

A laboratory experiment can demonstrate an effect in a test tube.

An animal study can investigate a biological response in another species.

A small human trial can provide a reason for further research.

None of those, alone, proves that every jar of Shilajit will produce the same result in every person.

The study has to be read, not merely quoted.

Personal experience

Some people report that Shilajit improves their energy, resilience, concentration, recovery or general sense of wellbeing.

Those experiences are real experiences.

They shouldn’t be mocked simply because they are subjective.

They also can’t establish with certainty whether the result came from:

  • Shilajit

  • Expectation

  • A simultaneous lifestyle change

  • Natural variation

  • Another supplement

  • A combination of factors

Personal experience can help someone decide whether a product feels worthwhile to them.

It cannot replace controlled research or product testing.

What do we mean when we say Shilajit “works”?

The question is less straightforward than it sounds.

Works for what?

For whom?

At what dose?

Over what period?

Using which product?

“Does Shilajit work?” might mean:

  • Does it change a laboratory marker?

  • Does it improve subjective energy?

  • Does it support exercise recovery?

  • Does it affect testosterone in a particular population?

  • Does it act as a general restorative?

  • Does it treat a diagnosed medical condition?

  • Does it compensate for poor sleep and an appalling diet?

Those are different questions requiring different evidence.

A supplement may produce a modest benefit for some people without being a medical treatment or a miraculous transformation.

That is still a benefit.

The health industry has a habit of treating effectiveness as binary. Either an ingredient changes your life or it is worthless.

Reality is usually less dramatic.

Product quality changes the entire conversation

Research into Shilajit doesn’t automatically apply to every product sold under the name.

Two jars can differ in:

  • Geographical source

  • Raw-material composition

  • Purification

  • Filtration

  • Heat exposure

  • Water content

  • Humic and fulvic measurements

  • Mineral profile

  • Microbial quality

  • Environmental contaminants

  • Added ingredients

  • Actual amount of Shilajit solids

This is why we devote so much of the guide to manufacturing, testing and analytical methods.

A product cannot borrow credibility from a study merely because both contain something called Shilajit.

The material used in the research and the commercial product should be meaningfully comparable.

That's often difficult to establish.

Safety without hysteria

We will talk about heavy metals, microorganisms, mould, PAHs, solvents and other potential contaminants.

That doesn’t mean every jar of Shilajit is a biohazard.

It means natural materials have hazards that need to be identified and controlled.

A serious safety discussion should explain:

  • Which risks are plausible

  • Where they may originate

  • Which processes may reduce them

  • Which tests can detect them

  • What the results mean at the actual serving size

  • Where uncertainty remains

Fearmongering isn’t useful.

Neither is pretending that “natural” means incapable of causing harm.

Chemistry without turning every molecule into a miracle

Shilajit contains a complicated mixture of substances.

That makes it scientifically interesting.

It also makes it extremely easy to abuse chemistry in marketing.

Detecting a compound doesn’t prove that the finished product contains a meaningful dose.

Identifying a possible mechanism doesn’t prove a noticeable benefit in humans.

Finding minerals doesn’t mean the product is nutritionally significant.

Measuring a large percentage doesn’t mean much when the method and reporting basis are hidden.

  • Phenolic compounds

  • Moisture

Tradition without imaginary mountain folklore

We enjoy the history and folklore surrounding Shilajit.

It would be difficult not to.

A dark substance emerging from remote mountains, used across generations and surrounded by names such as “conqueror of mountains” is considerably more intriguing than another beige supplement powder.

But folklore should be presented as folklore.

Historical evidence should be presented as historical evidence.

Scientific findings should be presented as science.

When the sources are incomplete, we’ll say so.

When several traditions disagree, we won’t invent one universal ancient recipe.

When a modern practice is merely dressed in traditional language, we’ll point that out too.

Shilajit has enough genuine history.

It doesn’t need an imaginary Himalayan grandmother added by the marketing department.

We sell Shilajit, so are we unbiased?

No company selling a product is completely neutral about that product.

One Life Foods sells Shilajit.

That gives us a commercial interest, and you should know it.

It also gives us a responsibility.

We could make stronger claims, simplify the science and avoid discussing uncomfortable subjects. That might sell more jars in the short term.

We’d rather be honest.

We won’t pretend that our interpretation is the only possible interpretation. We will explain where the evidence is stronger, where it is preliminary, where reasonable people may disagree and where the answer simply isn’t known.

Where research supports a positive conclusion, we’ll say so.

Where it doesn’t, we won’t stretch it until it does.

We’d rather lose a sale by being transparent than gain one by promising something the evidence cannot support.

It won’t pretend that uncertainty is proof of effectiveness.

It also won’t pretend that uncertainty is proof of uselessness.

Most importantly, it won’t insult you with claims that collapse the moment somebody asks a sensible follow-up question.

Our practical position on using Shilajit

We believe that a well-made Shilajit product can be worth using.

We don’t think everyone needs it.

We don’t think every user will notice the same effects.

We don’t think taking more necessarily produces a better result.

We don’t think Shilajit should be sold as a cure for conditions that require proper medical attention.

We do think that sourcing, processing, concentration and testing matter enormously.

We think consumers deserve to know what they are buying.

And we think Shilajit is more interesting when the truth is allowed to be complicated.

Final thoughts: taking Shilajit seriously

Our position is not that Shilajit is useless.

Nor is it that Shilajit can do everything.

We believe it is an unusual, historically important and scientifically interesting natural material with credible reasons for thoughtful use and further research.

We also believe its reputation has been damaged by exaggerated claims, invented chemistry, weak products and brands willing to say almost anything beside a photograph of a mountain.

Throughout this guide, we’ll praise good evidence, challenge weak evidence, respect tradition, question folklore and admit when the honest answer is that we don’t know yet.

That isn’t scepticism for the sake of scepticism.

It is what taking Shilajit seriously looks like.

We sell Shilajit because we believe it has value. We challenge Shilajit claims because honesty has value too.

A final note from me

I created this guide because Shilajit has become much harder to understand than it needs to be.

There’s good material available, but it sits alongside exaggerated health claims, misleading laboratory figures, questionable authenticity tests and marketing stories that are often repeated without evidence.

One Life Foods sells Shilajit, so we clearly have a commercial interest in the subject. We also believe that selling it gives us a responsibility to explain what we know, what the evidence suggests and what remains uncertain.

This guide isn’t designed to persuade everyone to take Shilajit.

It’s designed to help you understand the material, evaluate products more critically and decide whether Shilajit has a place in your own routine.

We’ll continue updating the guide as new research becomes available, testing methods improve and better questions emerge.
