What this is

This is real Irish Sea Moss.
The original species. Chondrus crispus.

It is hand-harvested from the Atlantic Ocean along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, where it grows seasonally in cold, mineral-rich water.

Nothing has been done to it after harvesting.
No bleaching.
No polishing.
No attempt to make it look uniform.

What you’re getting is the raw material exactly as it comes from the ocean.

Why most sea moss isn’t the same

A lot of what is sold as sea moss today isn’t actually Irish sea moss.

Most of it:
• Comes from tropical regions
• Is a different species called Gracilaria
• Is farmed in controlled environments
• Grows all year round

It is often cleaned or processed to improve appearance.

True Chondrus crispus grows in colder Atlantic waters, in shorter seasons, and is much harder to harvest.

That is why it is rarer. And why it tends to cost more.

What real sea moss looks like

If you are used to seeing bright gold, perfectly uniform sea moss online, this will look different.

That is because it has not been standardised.

Colour naturally varies:
• Purple
• Brown
• Green
• Amber

Often all in the same batch.

Texture varies too:
• Fine strands
• Thicker pieces
• Uneven shapes

Ours has not been bleached or processed to create a uniform appearance. Many products on the market are cleaned or lightened to look more consistent.

Colour alone does not determine quality, but uniformity usually tells you how much it has been handled.

Signs it is genuinely wild

Wild sea moss grows as part of a living environment, not in isolation.

You may notice:
• Small pieces of other seaweed
• Tiny shell or mineral particles
• Light, lace-like formations on some fronds

That lace-like structure is usually a bryozoan, a harmless marine organism.

It is not mould.
It is not contamination.
It is not spoilage.

It is simply part of the ocean environment and one of the clearest signs that the sea moss is genuinely wild.

Everything is removed during preparation.

Why buy whole sea moss instead of gel

Most people buy gel for convenience, but it comes with trade-offs.

With whole sea moss:
• You control freshness
• You control strength and consistency
• You control how it is prepared

Cost comparison:
• 100g whole sea moss makes up to ~2 litres of gel
• Most ready-made gels sell 250ml for £10 to £12

You can make the same amount for a fraction of the cost.

Shelf life:
• Whole sea moss lasts up to 2 years
• Gel lasts around 2 to 3 weeks in the fridge

It is simply a better way to use it.

Benefits of Irish sea moss

Sea moss is a naturally occurring source of minerals, including iodine, which contributes to normal thyroid function.

As a whole food, it can be used as part of a varied and balanced diet.

Many people choose to include sea moss in their routine as a way to incorporate mineral-rich whole foods into their nutrition.

It is not a quick fix, but a simple addition to a broader approach to diet and lifestyle.

How to prepare sea moss

The traditional Irish way

  1. Soak 25g of sea moss in water for around 12 hours or overnight.
It will expand as it hydrates.
  2. Remove the moss and bring around 700ml of water to the boil, then turn the heat off.
  3. Add the soaked moss to the hot water and stir.
Cover and leave for 10 minutes.
  4. Stir again, replace the lid, and leave for another 10 minutes.
  5. Transfer to a blender and blend for around 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. Adjust water if needed to reach your preferred consistency.
  7. Pour into a sealable container, allow to cool, then refrigerate.

It will set into a gel after around 8 to 12 hours.

You can then add it to:
• Smoothies
• Food
• Daily routines

FAQs

Why doesn’t your sea moss look golden and uniform?

Because it has not been standardised. Wild Irish sea moss varies naturally in colour and structure. You will see a mix of purple, brown, green and amber. Ours has not been bleached or processed to look uniform. Colour alone does not define quality, but uniformity usually reflects how much it has been handled.

Is this definitely Chondrus crispus?

Yes. We only source true Irish sea moss from the Atlantic, not tropical substitutes.

What is the white or lace-like material on some pieces?

This is usually a bryozoan, a harmless marine organism. It is a sign of wild growth and is removed during preparation.

Why is there sand or debris in the bag?

Because it is wild-harvested. Small amounts of sand, shell, or natural debris are normal and expected.

How long does sea moss last?

Dried sea moss can last up to 2 years when stored correctly. Once made into gel, it lasts around 2 to 3 weeks in the fridge.

Why buy whole sea moss instead of gel?

You get full control over freshness, strength, and preparation, and it is significantly more cost-effective.

How much gel does 100g make?

Up to around 2 litres, depending on how you prepare it.

Is sea moss safe to take daily?

Sea moss is a natural source of iodine and minerals. Intake should be sensible and consistent with your overall diet.

Important note

Because this is wild-harvested from the Atlantic Ocean, you may notice:
• Sand
• Small shell fragments
• Natural debris

This is completely normal and expected. It is a sign that the product has not been over-processed.

The bottom line

Most sea moss on the market is farmed and processed for appearance.

This is not.

This is real, wild Irish sea moss, harvested seasonally and left exactly as it should be.

Hand-harvested Wild Irish organic Chondrus crispus (Irish sea moss). Harvested from the Wild Atlantic Way (Western coat of Ireland).

How to Make Sea Moss Gel:

    • Take around 10g Sea moss. Rinse and clean in cold water (we recommend 3 rinses). Then cover in Luke warm water for a couple of hours (It will expand). (30 minutes is the minimum required soaking time. Don't soak for any longer than 12 hours).
    • Drain off water and place 1 cup Sea moss to 1.5 cup fresh water in blender and blend for around 2 minutes. Check consistency until you are happy with it. If too runny, add more moss. If too thick, add more water. You can also incorporate fruit of choice into the gel, as well as adding other health promoting ingredients such as honey, ginger and herbal adaptogens.

    • Cover and place in the refrigerator — it should set in around 8-12 hours.

Irish sea moss works well when combined with Ashwagandha and/or Siberian Ginseng.

    The Traditional Irish Way

Add the moss to the boiling water and stir. Cover and leave for 10 minutes. Stir again, replace lid and leave for another 10 minutes. Add to blender and blend for around 5 minutes depending on strength of blender. Adjust to suit your consistency preferences. When happy with consistency pour into a sealable container.
